Projects
Fresher’s Week – freshers@mmsa.org.mt
As the first few days of a new experience may be daunting, SCOME takes it upon itself to help ease the freshmen into the medical course. By joining forces with the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, during Fresher’s Week SCOME aims to give new students an overview of what the course entails, what to expected and where to find help.
Aches and Pains – achesandpains@mmsa.org.mt
The idea of the project is to give medical students an opportunity to learn how to deal with common everyday complaints (hence the title “Aches and Pains”) in simple ways. Though medical textbooks are as well of knowledge for the many diverse medical conditions that exist, they usually contain very little about the basic remedies for common afflictions. Also, as always, the most important things cannot be learnt from a book, so, with the aid of experienced doctors, Aches and Pains provides an opportunity to discuss and share knowledge, experience and perhaps even a few tricks of the trade.
4 Life | First Aid awareness Campaign – firstaid@mmsa.org.mt
First Aid is a basic skill, and MMSA believes that everyone should receive adequate training in this regard so that tragedies that occur due to lack of First Aid knowledge will be prevented. This campaign has many subsectors, one of which is the promotion of First Aid courses with first year medical students. First Aid demonstrations during Freshers’ week on Campus also feature and are to be included them in the blood donation campaigns too. The aim is to promote the importance of having First Aid skills and to make sure the public knows how to handle situations where First Aid is required. The campaign is held in association with Red Cross Malta Society.
Careers Convention – careers@mmsa.org.mt
A career is much more than a degree, and getting past your final year exams is only the first step. To help students get a clearer picture of what is to come, SCOME prepares an annual careers convention where different specialities are introduced to medical students, and interaction with specialists and specialist trainees allows for an increased awareness of the finer aspects of the route ahead.
Minima Medicamenta – minimamedicamenta@mmsa.org.mt
A small publication produced as the fruit of student initiative, Minima Medicamenta aims to maintain the momentum gained by the SISM association in Italy. It consists of a booklet which will contain a number of authentic clinical case reports which clinical students themselves collect from the wards. This publication aims not only to help share knowledge and interesting medical articles, but also to get students into the habit of writing in the medical register, and start developing skills in scientific publication.
Suturing – suturing@mmsa.org.mt
SCOME aims to improve both the knowledge and the skills of future doctors. This endeavour organises and facilitates the learning process of certain skills which may not be so easily acquired in the clinical setting, as is the case with sutures.
MEDIK-T (Medical Education Development International Kit – Training)
Students’ knowledge about medical education was identified as being one of the major obstacles to student involvement in SCOME and their own education. With the aim of improving this, MEDIK-T was introduced to give importance to SCOME’s roles, which revolve around medical education.
