Human Rights & Peace

In deciding to become doctors we have unconsciously signed up for several other things – long hours of studying, lack of sleep and perhaps a higher predisposition to panic attacks. Something else that comes along with being a doctor, however, is   having contact with other human being, namely patients. This particular attribute has over the years led the role of the doctor to be perceived by the general public as an honourable one.

In SCORP (Standing committee for Human Rights and Peace) it is our duty to ensure that as medical students and future doctors we provide the people with not only a higher standard of health but also the dignity that each and every one of us deserves. In SCORP therefore we design and hold campaigns which specifically target the link between human rights and health.   It is our belief in SCORP that everyone one and everyone equally has a right to  acceptable   and accessible healthcare and therefore anything which hold back any of our patients from achieving the same standard of health as others is wrong.

Some of the campaigns that we hold in this aim are:

Peace Test, in which in conjunction with NPET, SCORPians  visit secondary and primary school and carry out with the students several exercises aimed to test the levels of tolerance the  students show towards different people from different religious, racial and ethnic backgrounds. We also hold Human Rights Day / Week, a massive (and massively fun) campaign in which we attempt to  promote  human rights to the general public. A campaign who’s beaut lies in the several liaisons it offers with several other organizations and participate in international efforts.

At any rate, if your aim is not to become a good doctor but a GREAT doctor, one who believes in the uniqueness and dignity of your patients then SCORP activities are definitely the way for you J

For any information or any questions just send an email or find the closest SCORPian and ask for help :)
