The MAMA Campaign, Medics Advocating for Maternal Affairs, started off with a workshop last Friday. It was aimed at teaching students how to advocate for maternal health, in preparation for peer education sessions coming up with the goal of raising awareness, preparing future mothers for motherhood and for mothers' well being.
During our workshop, Dr Katia Vella, Ms Carmen Portelli, both gynecologists with great experience in their field and Mrs Rebecca Mizzi and Mrs Ruth Xuereb, both midwives with extensive experience with mothers-to-be delivered three talks which tackled prenatal care, antenatal care and minor ailments and post-partum care respectively. All aspects of maternal health were touched upon from the point of view of gynecologists and midwives, two of the vital professions which aid women through the rite of passage.
Moreover, the attendees, which amounted to over 80, were given the oppurtunity to talk to these professionals in smaller working groups, where cases and dilemmas were tackled in greater detail.
Lastly, we would like to thank all for attending our workshop and our collaborators, Organizazzjoni Studenti Qwiebel and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for their professional guidance.
Stay tuned for what's next in the MAMA campaign!
